Celebrating 25 Years of UNESCO World Heritage
Championing the continued viability of the Blue Mountains
Vibrant Blue Mountains

VIBRANT BLUE MOUNTAINS (2026) features a living, breathing, cultural landscape that responds to time, weather, and the presence of people. Those who live here, and those who visit become part of its ongoing story. Today, the Blue Mountains region faces new pressures: habitat loss, invasive species, declining wildlife, and the growing footprint of tourism and human activity.
VIBRANT BLUE MOUNTAINS showcases the rich biodiversity of the Blue Mountains after 25 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Park and reveals the many ways in which people are energised by coming here. Nature benefits our wellbeing, but are we doing enough to meet the challenges of ensuring the Park’s sustainability for future generations?
Shifts of Perception from Exploitable Wilderness to Restorative Sanctuary
Since European Settlement, the concept of wilderness paid scant regard to Indigenous Heritage, instead evolving from a place of fear and desolation to one with explorers’ curiosity and search for economic exploitation and use without regard to keeping intact its pristine state. It was not until the 1930s that an environmental movement began that wanted to preserve this part of the world.
Towards a Sustainable Future sees wilderness as a source for recreation, mindfulness, spiritual renewal, and conservation. Wilderness is a space where the human mind can find solace, inspiration and a sense of belonging to something larger than oneself. The book describes a new ideal which inspires a sense of wonder and a desire to connect with nature’s untamed magic.
In the below painting by German C.P. Friedrich, the figure is shown from behind, inviting the viewer to share the perspective, triggering an emotional impact of nature in the viewer. As an emblem of self-reflection or contemplation of life’s path, the landscape of the solitary Wanderer evokes the sublime – humility and greater mysteries and potential beyond the ordinary.

The past tells us to respect nature’s spirit and to nurture environmental protection. More than 200 years after the above painting was completed, the Blue Mountains area is now at a point at which we can value nature in ways we have not hitherto taken as seriously as we now recognise we must.
By examining the health of the Blue Mountains today, VIBRANT BLUE MOUNTAINS inspires a new civic awareness, one of an ethical stewardship of nature to prolong and enable future generations to also enjoy what we enjoy today. VIBRANT BLUE MOUNTAINS advocates future sustainability, a progressive step towards natural and social justice, true to today’s zeitgeist.
